A chair with centuries of history

The equipal goes back to pre-Hispanic Mexico, and it is still made by hand today, mostly in Jalisco around Guadalajara. Artisans build a base of crisscrossed cedar slats, bind it with fiber and stretch tanned pigskin or leather over the seat and back. No nails, no screws.

The result is light, sturdy and surprisingly cool to sit on, which is why you will see equipales in patios and restaurants all over Mexico, and now all over Austin.

Equipales: common questions

What are equipales made of?

Equipales are made of woven cedar slats bound with fiber, with tanned pigskin or leather stretched over the seat and back.

Where are your equipales from?

They are handmade in Mexico, mostly in the state of Jalisco, the traditional home of the equipal.

Can equipales stay outside?

They do best on a covered patio. Keep them out of standing water and constant rain so the leather and wood last.

Do you sell equipal tables and sets?

Yes. We carry chairs, tables and full patio sets when they are in stock. Call (512) 704-6318 to check what is in the store.
