What is a chiminea?

A chiminea is a freestanding outdoor fireplace with a round belly and a chimney on top. The design comes from Mexico, where clay chimineas have been used for centuries for heat and cooking. The chimney draws the smoke up and away from the people sitting around it.

Clay or metal?

Clay chimineas are traditional and beautiful, and they hold heat well. Metal chimineas are heavier-duty and handle bigger fires. We carry both, so come see which one fits your patio.

Using a clay chiminea

  • Put sand or lava rock in the bottom before the first fire.
  • Start with small fires to cure the clay.
  • Keep it on a stand, off the grass, and cover it when it rains.
  • Check your local burn rules before lighting up.

Chimineas: common questions

Do you sell clay chimineas?

Yes. We keep clay chimineas in several sizes, plus metal ones. Call (512) 704-6318 to check stock.

How do I cure a new clay chiminea?

Add sand or lava rock to the bottom, then burn three or four small fires before building a full one. This lets the clay harden gradually.

Can a chiminea stay outside in the rain?

Cover a clay chiminea or keep it under a roof when it rains. Water soaks into the clay and can crack it when you light a fire.
